Fake toonies have the been a scourge on the Canadian economy, and for collectors, as well. Coin roll hunters are taking HUGE risks picking up large quantities of toonies to hunt. One collector I know picked up a box that was entirely counterfeit cameltoe toonies ($1,000 worth!). In that case, he noticed before he left the bank and was able to exchange for real coins. If a collector couldn't exchange the, that could be devastating. For seasoned collectors, the ubiquitous cameltoe toonie is easy to spot. But, a new counterfeit has been spotted in the wild. It's causing some confusion - particularly amongst collectors, as it has the look of a proof (or even a silver toonie - yes those really do exist!).
