Nikon Z5 vs Nikon Z5 II - Image Quality Review

In this video, I compare the image quality of the Nikon Z5 and the Nikon Z5 II using real-world landscape and astrophotography images. Both cameras feature 24MP full-frame sensors, but the Z5 II uses a newer BSI (backside illuminated) sensor and the EXPEED 7 processor, while the original Z5 uses a standard CMOS sensor with EXPEED 6. I tested both cameras across a wide ISO range (100–25,600), shadow recovery, highlight recovery, and night sky performance to see if the newer sensor makes a real difference. All images shown are RAW files, unedited aside from white balance adjustments. If you're trying to decide whether the Z5 II offers meaningful image quality improvements over the original Z5, this side-by-side comparison will help clarify the real differences. 🎯 My Recommendation for Landscape Photography For most landscape photographers shooting at base ISO, the image quality between the Nikon Z5 and Nikon Z5 II is essentially the same. Dynamic range performance is very similar, and differences in daylight scenes are minimal. Where the Z5 II pulls ahead is in extreme low light and astrophotography scenarios. At higher ISOs and when pushing exposure in post, the Z5 II produces slightly cleaner files with less noise and better shadow integrity. That said, image quality alone would not be enough reason for me to upgrade from the Z5 to the Z5 II. However, when you factor in the autofocus, processor improvements, and additional feature upgrades of the Z5 II, the overall package becomes more compelling, but image quality alone likely isn’t enough reason to switch. If you primarily shoot landscapes at low ISO, you can confidently stick with the original Z5. If you regularly shoot astro or push your files heavily in post, the Z5 II offers a measurable advantage.
