Today we will take a deep dive into the first panoramic photograph of San Francisco, taken in the year 1878 by Eadweard Muybridge. By all accounts, Muybridge is considered one of the most influential photographic artists of the 19th century, having been given credit for cutting edge new inventions, like the Zoopraxiscope, which served as a precursor to the modern day motion picture camera. When looking at San Francisco, this photograph is truly more fascinating the more time that you spend looking at it. So today I will examine the details of this incredible photograph - an image (or group of images) where can you quite literally view every inch of Pre-1900 San Francisco. The detail in the panorama is nothing short of unbelievable, as you can zoom in on any part of the photograph and identify buildings and businesses miles off in the distance. This may be one of the greatest “Old World” photographs of all time, and the history of San Francisco is no less unexplainable. According to the narrative, prior to the Gold Rush, San Francisco was little more than a small town of around 1,000 people, yet within 30 years of the Gold Rush, San Francisco had grown into the seemingly endless city that we see in the photographs. All of these intricate facets of the city were lost in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, rendering the photographs we will look at today as some of the most important pieces of American History.
