Officials provide update on deadly Tennessee plant explosion that claimed 16 lives

Officials are still working to positively identity two victims of the 16 killed in a deadly plant explosion earlier this month on the Hickman-Humphreys County line. Up until this point, rapid DNA tests identified the remains of 14 victims, days after the incident. "It really saddens me that we still have two souls that we have not been able to locate at this point," Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said. Sheriff Davis adds he spoke with both of those families, and there will still be continued DNA testing in hopes of identifying the remaining victims. Representatives from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives shared Friday morning that the explosion originated from the lower floor production level. Additionally, they say 24,000-28,000 pounds of explosives ignited in the incident. Our national response team, certified explosive specialists, engineers, chemists and other experts work carefully, often times on their knees, hand sifting and methodically examining every inch of the affected area," Jamey VanVliet, special agent in charge with ATF's Nashville field division, said. "While documenting and collecting evidence to find what caused this tragedy - to find answers for those lives forever changed." ATF has completed processing the scene and identified multiple scientific hypothesis regarding what caused the deadly incident. Investigators now move to phase two which will take place at ATF labs and testing facilities.
