He was commissioned into the 9th Battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment in December 1981. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he commanded a battalion, a brigade, and eventually a division. especially in sensitive areas like Jammu & Kashmir. He also held significant responsibilities in India’s elite counter-terrorism force, the National Security Guard (NSG) first as Deputy Inspector General of Operations, and later as Inspector General of Operations. Representing India, he served in a United Nations mission, and also went on to become the Commandant of the Army War College, the Indian Army's premier training institute. For his outstanding leadership and service, he was honored with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal — two of the highest peacetime military decorations in India. In 2016, when terrorists attacked the Pathankot Airbase in Punjab, Major General Dushyant Singh was leading the counter-operation as the Deputy Commandant of NSG.
