Planespotting Ramstein: Heavies & Allied Air Combat Training

Dear friends, In June 2024, Ramstein Air Base hosted a 1 vs 1 aerial combat exercise where NATO fighter jets engaged in simulated dogfights. Pilots from multiple allied nations trained in one-on-one scenarios to improve maneuvering, targeting, and evasion skills. The drills focused on refining air combat tactics, increasing pilot proficiency, and enhancing interoperability between NATO air forces. Departing in waves of two aircraft, it was clear who was engaging in simulated dogfights. Unfortunately, there was no official list or public information about the outcomes of these mock engagements. Let’s take a closer look at some of the participants: USAF 89-2000 F-16CM: This aircraft began its operational career in 1990, delivered to the 70th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS), later redesignated as the 70th Fighter Squadron (FS). In 1993, it was transferred to Ramstein Air Base, where it served with the 526th Fighter Squadron through 1994. During the Yugoslav Wars, this F-16 downed a Yugoslav Air Force Galeb with an AIM-9M Sidewinder missile over Bosnia. After completing several combat missions, it was relocated to Aviano Air Base, where it has remained for over 30 years. RDAF E-194 F-16AM: With its first flight in 1981, E-194 is one of the oldest active F-16s in the world. This particular jet began its service in the same squadron it flies with today. After several squadron transfers, it was upgraded from a Block 10 F-16 to a Block 20 MLU (Mid-Life Update) version.
