Three UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were brought down in the city using rocket-propelled grenades. The US launched a huge rescue mission for the survivors but encountered heavy resistance. Known as the Battle of Mogadishu, the conflict was dramatized in Ridley Scott’s 2001 war film, Black Hawk Down. Using newly restored footage filmed by ITN’s camera crew stationed in Somalia at the time, ITN Archive presents a special documentary chronicling the events leading up to the battle.
