Raja, a 29-year-old businessman from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, had recently married Sonam Raghuwanshi, 25, on May 11, 2025. Just days later, the couple traveled to Sohra (Cherrapunji) in East Khasi Hills for their honeymoon. On May 22, they checked into a homestay, left their belongings behind, and set out to explore the scenic Wei Sawdong Falls. The next day, tragedy struck. Between 2:00–2:18 PM on May 23, Raja was attacked by three men—Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Singh Chauhan—hired suspects who brutally committed crime him using a machete before dumping his body into a gorge. His last known video, captured earlier that day by tourist Dev Singh, showed Raja and Sonam walking together. Raja's decomposed body was later discovered on June 2 under the falls and identified by his brother Vipin Raghuwanshi via a tattoo on his body. As investigations unfolded, it was revealed that Sonam Raghuwanshi, along with her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha—an employee at her brother Govind Raghuwanshi’s factory—had meticulously planned the murder. The conspiracy included hiring hitmen and even plotting to burn a woman’s body to fake Sonam’s death. Sonam made her last call to her mother at 1:43 PM on May 23, after which her phone was switched off. Her mangalsutra and ring were found left behind at the homestay, raising suspicion. After going missing for two weeks, Sonam was spotted on a bus near Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 8 by Ujala Yadav, a local student. The next day, Sonam surrendered to police at a local dhaba and was arrested. She confessed to her involvement, which included providing a raincoat to the killers to avoid bloodstains and facilitating their escape. Raj Kushwaha, along with the three attackers, has also been arrested. Public outrage intensified when figures like Kangana Ranaut and Khan Sir commented on the case, calling out the senseless brutality of the crime. Raja’s parents, Uma and Ashok Raghuwanshi, and brothers Vipin and Sachin Raghuwanshi, demanded a narco test and harshest punishment for the accused. This case, stretching across Indore, Sohra, Shillong, Wei Sawdong Falls, Ghazipur, and Ujjain, has revealed a dark side of premeditated murder cloaked in a seemingly happy marriage.
