Reality of Winter on the Canals living aboard my Narrowboat

Running out of fuel in winter on a narrowboat is not something you want to mess around with — and I was down to my last bags of coal. This week turns into a race to catch the fuel boat before he heads back down the canal, forcing me onto the main line of the Llangollen Canal, via Trevor Basin, and across the breathtaking (and slightly terrifying) Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Coal. Diesel. Water. The three things that keep a boat — and a boater — going in winter. But winter narrowboating isn’t just about cruising through pretty scenery. It’s hauling ropes, lifting bridges, working locks, jumping on and off the boat, and constantly tackling whatever obstacle comes next — all in the cold. After successfully getting everything sorted, the day ends the best possible way: moored up, stove roaring, and a jacket potato that’s been cooking on top all day.
