A Roman legion consists of 5,000 soldiers, but the basic unit of military life – called the contubernium – is made up of 8 men, accustomed to living, working and training together. The daily chores and hardships, the community life, allow friendships to form, and sometimes an older legionary takes a liking to a younger one. The recent excavations carried out in the city of Lyon (South-East France) shed precious light on the daily lives of the Roman soldiers who occupied this urban garrison for almost 150 years. Numerous artefacts have been unearthed, such as 1st-century weapons as well as toiletry (ear picks and tweezers) and leisure items (dice and tokens). Thus, behind the myth of the fearless warrior, emerges the faces of men who spent long months in barracks, taking care of their personal hygiene and grooming, spending time playing with their comrades and mingling with the locals. Excavations also unveil moving testimonies to camp life, in its light or dark sides.
