Video Description
Rory Sutherland is one of my heroes. You might not know his name, but you’ve definitely been influenced by his work— as the Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK he has shaped the face of marketing and advertising as we know it today. He’s also become a recent TikTok phenomenon as others have realised what an absolute genius this man is. I was beyond excited to have him join me on the show. Rory is not only a marketeer, but an expert in behavioural science, talking me through how trends work and change over time. We spoke about memetics; how a herd mentality can massively dictate our tastes and the important role social awkwardness plays in swaying opinions. I also asked him about the best and worst marketing successes and failures, from Ryanair to bubble tea, nuclear power to wearing shorts in winter. This conversation was brimming with great advice - it’s definitely a conversation I’ll be coming back to; my main takeaway was to never blindly follow logic, but to question and push to boundaries to create something new! #RORYSUTHERLAND #GREATCOMPANYPODCAST #JAMIELAING 00:00 Coming up in the episode 00:30 Intro from Jamie 01:15 Jamie calls me one of his heroes 03:10 The surprising rise of podcasts 06:00 Why TikTok blew up 09:15 What actually makes something a trend? 12:10 The faster a trend explodes, the quicker it dies 14:35 The psychology behind the bubble tea craze 17:00 How social embarrassment shapes our decisions 22:35 Memetics and the power of herd mentality 24:45 Why I refuse to follow logic 28:15 Even revolutionary products need great marketing 29:50 Remember when people hated mobile phones? 32:00 Why some people will never accept air fryers 35:30 Trends spread like viruses 37:30 The genius behind Ryanair’s marketing 38:30 Why brands need to say no sometimes 42:30 The importance of rules in business 46:30 The psychological edge that makes products succeed 47:50 A brilliant product that flopped due to bad marketing 50:40 Nuclear power: the worst-marketed product in history 51:10 Why I am petitioning for San Pellegrino to bring back the foil lids 56:00 Red Bull tastes awful, but the marketing is genius 59:35 The final eight questions If you enjoyed this episode, please click follow - we have so many great guests like this one, you won't want to miss out! -- You can also follow us on: Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/greatcompanypodcast/ TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@greatcompanypodcast -- If you or anyone you know has been affected by suicidal thoughts, you can head to CALM to find support: www.thecalmzone.net -- THE CREDITS Exec Producer: Jemima Rathbone Assistant Producer: Gurlina Heer Video: Jake Ji Video Editor: Ryley Kirby Social Media: Laura Coughlan -- Great Company is an original podcast from JamPot
