Ruby Ridge was one of the most controversial federal law enforcement incidents in modern American history, raising serious questions about government overreach and the use of force. In August 1992, a standoff occurred at a remote cabin in northern Idaho involving Randy Weaver, his family, and federal agents from the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI. The confrontation began after Weaver failed to appear in court on federal weapons charges related to the illegal modification of shotguns. What followed was an eleven-day siege that escalated into violence. During the initial encounter, a U.S. Marshal, Weaver’s 14-year-old son Sammy Weaver, and the family dog were killed. The situation intensified when FBI sniper Lon Horiuchi fired shots that wounded Randy Weaver and killed his wife, Vicki Weaver, while she was holding their infant child inside the cabin. The incident ended with Weaver’s surrender, but the deaths and the rules of engagement used by federal agents sparked nationwide outrage and congressional investigations. Ruby Ridge remains a defining event in debates over federal authority, civil liberties, militia movements, and distrust of government power in the United States. For 11 days in August 1992 the country stood in amazement as they watched nonstop coverage of federal government agencies, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, the U.S. Marshal’s Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation with local law enforcement surrounded a small cabin in a standoff in the mountains of Idaho. When it was over, three people would be dead, and a government fed media spin machine went into hyper drive to try and make sense of what had happened at a place called Ruby Ridge. Hosted by Colin D.
