Rudolf Pleil promised to guide them safely across the border between East and West Germany. Instead, he led them into the forest—and they never came back. At his trial in 1950, when prosecutors accused him of nine murders, Pleil interrupted: "Nine? I killed twenty-five. I am the greatest killer in Germany." He didn't kill for money. He didn't kill to silence witnesses. He killed, as he coldly admitted in court, because it was "necessary for his sexual satisfaction." Rudolf Pleil was born in 1924 in a poor village in the Ore Mountains. His father was a communist who fled Nazi persecution. Young Rudolf learned to smuggle across borders as a child, and witnessed extreme violence during World War II. After Germany's collapse in 1945, he became an auxiliary police officer in the Soviet zone—then moved west to the border town of Zorge, where chaos, desperation, and invisible refugees created the perfect hunting ground. Working with two accomplices—Karl Hoffmann and teenager Konrad Schüssler—Pleil posed as a "border guide," offering safe passage to women trying to escape the Soviet occupation zone. He targeted the most vulnerable: refugees with no papers, no family, no one to report them missing. He raped them, killed them with axes and hammers, and buried their bodies in shallow graves, wells, and streams. For nearly two years, he operated freely in a lawless zone where jurisdiction ended at the border line and no one was counting the missing. He was finally arrested in April 1947—not for murdering women, but for killing a male commercial traveler in a drunken rage. Authorities initially treated it as manslaughter. But in prison, Pleil couldn't stop writing. He filled notebooks with detailed confessions, signed "Rudolf Pleil – the Deathmaker, retired." He even applied to be a state executioner and offered to reveal burial sites in exchange for trips outside the prison. His own need to brag became the evidence that destroyed him. The survivor who brought him down was Lydia Schmidt, a 55-year-old widow he had beaten, robbed, and sexually assaulted in December 1946. She survived, remembered his face, and went to the police. Her testimony reopened the investigation and connected Pleil's boastful writings to real crimes. On October 31, 1950, Rudolf Pleil, Karl Hoffmann, and Konrad Schüssler stood trial in Braunschweig. Pleil smiled at the judges, corrected the prosecutors, and insisted he had killed far more than they knew. Three psychiatrists examined him and concluded he was fully sane. On November 17, 1950, all three were convicted. Pleil and Hoffmann received life sentences. On February 16, 1958, Rudolf Pleil hanged himself in his cell at Celle prison. He was 33 years old. Officially, courts confirmed nine murders. He claimed twenty-five. The true number will never be known. What is certain is this: Rudolf Pleil did not need genius to kill so many.
