Sgraffito Carving an Underglazed Pinch Cup A Ceramics I Exercise

Video Description

This is the fourth video in a series of videos for my Ceramics I Students pinch cup exercise. It is an improved version of my old Ceramics I sgraffito carving video. It solves several problems kids encountered throughout the years, and I try to address those to prevent it. I made this video for my Ceramics I students at Mason High School. This is the first exercise (non-graded) that the kids do in clay for their semester Ceramics I class. They are learning and building skills they will use throughout the semester. They learn pinching, cleaning, underglazing, sgraffito carving, majolica glazing, and dip glazing for this exercise. The pinch pots are now leatherhard, with three to five layers of underglaze. Once the underglaze is applied, it is bagged until students are ready to carve. (See product links in either my Amazon influencer storefront or the Googledoc below) In the video I use a kemper ribbon tool with the triangle tip, and also pencils, and double ball stylus tools. These can be found in my Amazon Influencer store, or in the googledoc of links in the video description below. I show how you can equally divide a space to create an evenly spaced pattern, as well as drawing out the design in pencil to help with the placement of the carving. We are using Standard 103 for this exercise. It is lowfire and grogless red earthenware. It can be sponged- unlike groggy clay. We are using Amaco Velvet Underglazes.
