Video Description
In 1632, Henrietta Maria attended a royal masque dressed as Divine Beauty. Royal masques were hugely popular in the 17th century. They were theatrical and elaborate parties, with singing, dancing and drinking. Queens such as Anne of Denmark and Henrietta Maria would have worn elaborate costumes to have taken part in these performances. In this video, our experts in fashion history demonstrate how these Queens would have got dressed before they embarked on their Royal Masque. The dress being modelled is based on a real gown designed by Inigo Jones for the 1632 production of 'Tempe Restor'd'. Made in watchet and carnation silk and featuring star appliques, this ensemble is topped with a fabulous crown.
