Tens of thousands of people gathered to attend the rally by actor and politician Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar. Vijay was speaking on a makeshift stage erected on top of a bus when the stampede happened. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the “unfortunate incident” was “deeply saddening”.
