Adapted from Tom King’s acclaimed comic, Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow, this film redefines Kara Zor-El by going back to the origin that sets her apart from Superman. Kara didn’t grow up on a Kansas farm—she watched Krypton die three times. She survived Argo City’s slow destruction, witnessed her people suffer, and has carried that trauma ever since. The trailer leans into that world-weary, punk-cosmic tone, very Guardians of the Galaxy inspired: Kara drinking under red suns, frustrated with hope, and struggling to find a reason to keep going—until she crosses paths with Ruthye, a young girl whose pain mirrors her own. Their dynamic positions Ruthye as the lens through which we understand this hardened, complicated version of Supergirl, depicting her in her purest form. Director Craig Gillespie brings his signature flair for messy, resilient protagonists, and the cosmic Guardians-style energy—needle drops, bar fights, broken vibes, found family—feels right at home in Gunn’s DCU. Even the brief tease of Lobo hints at the comic’s themes of revenge, nihilism, and the dangerous path Kara could fall down if she stops caring. If Superman reintroduced the ideals of the House of El, Supergirl explores what happens when someone who has every reason to abandon those ideals chooses to fight for them anyway. Trauma, hope, found family, and cosmic grit all collide in what looks like a bold future for the DCU.
