Yuengling & Son was founded in 1829 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, by 21-year-old German immigrant David Gottlob Jüngling and remains family-owned six generations later while virtually every competitor from that era has vanished. Before Prohibition, approximately 1,300 breweries operated in the United States—by the time it ended 13 years later, the vast majority had been destroyed. At least 12 breweries once operated within 35 miles of Pottsville; Yuengling is the sole survivor. The family has endured a catastrophic fire in 1831, Prohibition from 1920 to 1933, the Great Depression, two World Wars, and near-bankruptcy in the 1980s when production fell to just 137,000 barrels annually. At its peak, the Yuengling fortune reached $1.9 billion according to Forbes, with the enterprise estimated to be worth considerably more as a 100% privately held company with no outside investors and no debt. David Gottlob Jüngling was born March 2, 1808, in Aldingen, Germany, into a brewing family, but as a second son had limited prospects when his older brother inherited the family brewery. In 1828, at approximately 20 years old, David emigrated to America, anglicizing his surname from "Jüngling" to "Yuengling" and establishing the Eagle Brewery in Pottsville in 1829. After fire destroyed the original brewery in 1831, David rebuilt on Mahantongo Street and hired coal miners to hand-dig elaborate caves into the mountainside over nearly 10 years. The caves maintained a constant 50 degrees Fahrenheit year-round—the precise temperature needed for lagering beer before mechanical refrigeration existed. This underground infrastructure allowed Yuengling to become one of America's earliest commercial lager producers by the 1840s. During Prohibition, Frank D. Yuengling kept the business alive by producing near-beer, medicinal porter, and ice cream, with the creamery operating until 1985. When Prohibition ended December 5, 1933, Yuengling shipped an entire truckload of "Winner Beer" to President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House the same day. By the 1980s, the brewery was barely generating $6 million in annual revenue as the anthracite coal industry collapsed and national giants crushed regional competitors. Dick Yuengling, born in 1943, left the family business in 1973 to run a beer distributorship for 11 years before returning in 1985 to purchase the company from his ailing father. Following Yuengling family tradition, Dick bought the brewery at full market value rather than inheriting it—a Germanic practice requiring ownership to be earned. In 1987, Dick introduced Yuengling Traditional Amber Lager, packaged in distinctive dark green bottles and priced at roughly $10.99 for a 12-pack. The lager became so iconic in Pennsylvania that ordering "a lager" at virtually any bar in the region would simply get you a Yuengling without further specification. Dick transformed the dying brewery from 137,000 to 2.8 million barrels annually—an increase of more than 2,000%—while keeping it entirely private. In 1995, Dick told his four daughters—Jennifer, Wendy, Debbie, and Sheryl—"I really need you now," and all eventually joined the company in different roles. For nearly 200 years, the brewery had passed from father to son, but the sixth generation breaks that pattern with four daughters preparing to become the first women to lead the company. Dick has privately told his daughters which one will receive at least 51% ownership but true to tradition, they will purchase the business rather than inherit it. Nearly 200 years after a German immigrant rebuilt his burned-down brewery, the Eagle still flies over Mahantongo Street and a sixth generation prepares to carry the family name into its third century.
