About

Florian Gadsby is a ceramicist working with stoneware and porcelain in North London — here you'll find videos that show process, how pottery is thrown and finished and finally glazed and kiln fired. The videos here show the processes behind his work, such as the throwing and trimming of tableware and more sculptural pieces. For more regular posts, including daily photographs and videos, make sure to follow over on my Instagram: (www.instagram.com/floriangadsby). I restock my online shop around 3/4 times a year, with about 300-400 pieces a time, if you'd like to receive a newsletter about when these go live you can sign up to my newsletter on my website, (https://www.floriangadsby.com/newsletter). I also leave the shop page online, even though it appears as sold out, it usually sells out in a few minutes time, just to give you an idea of what's available and the price range, (https://www.floriangadsby.com/shop). Video Description

I can finally share the results of my recent materials tests! I'm sorry this has taken so long, I initially made these test pots at the very start of a making cycle and I can't fire my kiln when it's practically empty, thus I had to throw hundreds of pots to accompany these. I'm wedging coarse malachite, chunks of tungsten, tourmaline and shards of obsidian into the high-iron stoneware clay body that I work with, thereafter I'll throw each into a small bowl to act as a test vessel. It's safe to say making these pots was a bit of a challenge due to how sharp and large some of the particles were and I can't believe how some of them ended up firing... Experiments like this are always surprising, some work, others create disasters and there's often lacklustre results too. The goal is to find materials that add life and character to the clay and glazes and I love creating these series of videos, so, if you have any ideas of materials I should try, please do let me know! LASTLY, please DON'T use malachite yourself, as in its raw state, when damp or immersed in water, it leaches copper and can be rather toxic to use. Thanks so much for watching and let me know which result you like best! Raw materials kindly gifted by Devon Malazdrewicz, Pagan, here's his websites, (he also makes fantastically sharp tungsten carbide trimming tools): Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sophisticated_pagan/ Website: https://sophisticatedpagan.ca If you'd like to watch the THROWING and TRIMMING of these in much more detail, you can watch that video here: https://youtu.be/8RcSM7X3x8s And if you'd like to find out more about how to glaze pots, you can find that here: https://youtu.be/_YDa_-hRGEw 📖 • ORDER MY BOOK: https://geni.us/bymyhands 🏺 • You may also be interested in my 'A Beginner's Guide' series, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2WJhtTF0eGhQwf8g2LHcom_KrvJpH_JT Timecodes: 0:00 - Introduction & mixing the raw materials into my clay 4:37 - Bad news about the Frankenstein clay 6:34 - Biscuit firing the bowls to 1000ºC 8:01 - The first, disastrous result 9:42 - Glazing & waxing the bowls 10:48 - Tidying the glazed bowls surfaces 11:25 - Packing the bowls into my Rohde KG-340 gas kiln & reduction firing them 12:47 - Unpacking the kiln & sanding the bowls 14:12 - THE RESULTS! • Find out much more via the link below! https://linktr.ee/floriangadsby • Get in touch here: https://www.floriangadsby.com/contact Sign up to my newsletter here: https://www.floriangadsby.com/newsletter
