The P-51 Mustang is widely regarded as the most capable single-engine fighter of the Second World War, but its path to greatness was anything but straightforward. This video tells the full engineering story behind the aircraft that broke the Luftwaffe's grip on European skies. In April 1940, North American Aviation made a bold promise to the British Purchasing Commission: a brand-new fighter, designed from scratch, ready to fly in 120 days. What emerged from that deadline was the NA-73X, a prototype built in just 102 days by a small team of engineers working late into the night. The airframe was unlike anything that had come before. Its laminar-flow wing, developed in cooperation with NACA, shifted the thickest point of the wing profile further aft than any production fighter had attempted, reducing skin-friction drag at high speed. Its fuselage was mathematically lofted using conic section geometry for the smoothest possible surface. And beneath its belly sat the signature ventral scoop, a cooling system designed around the Meredith Effect, which used the heat absorbed by the engine coolant to accelerate exhaust air rearward and partially recover the drag penalty every liquid-cooled fighter paid just to stay cool. But the Allison V-1710 engine that powered the early Mustang had a hard ceiling. Above 15,000 feet, its single-stage supercharger ran out of breath. The aircraft that outran everything at low altitude became sluggish and outclassed at the altitudes where the real air war was being fought. It was a Rolls-Royce test pilot named Ronald Harker who identified the solution. After flying the Allison Mustang for 30 minutes in April 1942, he wrote a now-famous report arguing that fitting the Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 with its two-stage, two-speed intercooled supercharger into the Mustang airframe would produce the finest fighter in Allied service. The Merlin was only one inch longer than the Allison. The conversion was approved, and the results were immediate. Top speed increased by 51 miles per hour. Climb to 20,000 feet dropped from 9.1 minutes to 5.9 minutes. The service ceiling leaped past 40,000 feet. The P-51B had arrived.
