Video Description
Today’s science is revealing astonishing characteristics of our green neighbours. Plants can move, smell, listen, speak and taste; in one word, they communicate. They even seem to appreciate music. Plants have no brain, no nervous system, thus distinguishing themselves from animals. Nevertheless, they are continuously interacting with their environment, and science has proven that some can even recognise members of the same family. The lords of green react to signals by modifying their metabolism or their organogenesis (how they grow). They communicate with each other, send and receive warning signals, and can even “speak” and ally with animals to fight their enemies. Others have evolved to imitate the looks and smells of a female insect; thus dispersing their pollen via the attracted male. If a very simple plant has 600 different kinds of receptors for detecting odours and tastes in the environment, humans have fewer than 20! Signals that plants are using to talk to each other are biochemically very similar to the hormones we have in our bodies. Plants “talk”!
