Germany built more tank destroyers than tanks during the Second World War, and almost none of them were planned. They were reactions. A new enemy tank showed up that they couldn't stop, so they found a bigger gun, bolted it onto whatever chassis was available, and sent it to the front. This video covers the full evolution from the Panzer Jäger 1 with its Czech gun mounted on an obsolete light tank all the way to the 72-ton Jagdtiger carrying a 128mm naval gun that could punch through any Allied armor at any range. You'll learn why the 37mm anti-tank gun earned the nickname "door knocker," how the Stug 3 accidentally became a tank destroyer after starting life as infantry support, and why the Ferdinand with its 200mm of frontal armor was still a disaster because nobody thought to include a machine gun for close defense. The video gets into the pattern that kept repeating. The Nashorn had a magnificent gun but left crews exposed behind thin armor. The Jagdpanther was arguably excellent but more were destroyed by their own crews than by enemy fire because they kept breaking down at the worst moments.
