Baron Jean de Selys Longchamps hadn’t been cleared for the mission. In fact, he’d been flatly denied, again and again. But on January 20, 1943, the Belgian aristocrat-turned-RAF pilot strapped himself into a Hawker Typhoon and decided he was done asking permission. He turned off his radio and sent his wingman back to base as he swept down over Brussels, hugging the rooftops. His Typhoon’s engine howled through streets he knew intimately.
