In this video, I uncover the shocking and often gruesome duties performed by medieval barbers, who acted as surgeons, dentists, and all-purpose medical practitioners long before modern medicine existed. We begin with the era’s strange and symbolic haircuts, including the monk’s tonsure, the fearsome Norman haircut, and the long, wild zazzera style, cuts that could reveal a man’s profession, religion, or social rank. But aesthetic grooming was only a fraction of their work. Medieval barbers also performed enemas as a common “cure-all,” treating everything from stomach problems to fevers. They handled broken bones, resetting and splinting limbs with primitive tools and frightening accuracy. Their most infamous task, bloodletting, was believed to balance the body’s humors, often leaving patients weaker than before. When wounds became infected or needed sealing, barbers turned to cauterization, pressing heated metal directly onto flesh to burn it shut. They also acted as dentists, performing tooth extractions without anesthesia. Some procedures were even more dangerous. Barbers attempted early forms of cataract surgery, using a needle to push the cloudy lens out of the way, an act as risky as it sounds. They also performed trepanation, drilling a hole into the skull to “release evil spirits” or relieve pressure. And when infection or injury became severe, barbers carried out amputations, relying on speed, strength, and a hot iron to keep the patient alive. This video explores how medieval barbers became the most unexpectedly essential, and terrifying, professionals of their age.
