During this time, powerful civilizations rose in the Near East. It was an era of lavish palaces, awe-inspiring monuments, and the flourishing of writing and art. A Babylonian king could sip Hittite wine, while his queen wore jewelry made from Cretan amber. But this age came to an abrupt and unexpected end in a sudden catastrophe. In this video, we’ll explore the causes behind the Late Bronze Age collapse—a crisis that led to the fall of great empires, the decline of literacy, and the erosion of culture. Join us as we uncover how war, drought, economic turmoil, and the invasion of the “Sea Peoples” came together to create the perfect storm that brought the Bronze Age civilizations to their knees. By around 1175 BCE, the ancient world of the Eastern Mediterranean was unraveling. Major cities and trade hubs, such as Ugarit—once one of the most important centers of commerce—were destroyed. We know of Ugarit’s fall from a clay tablet found in a kiln, containing an unfinished letter from the city’s ruler pleading for help. It was never sent. The city had already fallen. This collapse wasn’t isolated. Across the region, a perfect storm of crises was unfolding. Years of prolonged drought, crop failures, and famine had weakened populations and economies. International trade networks, the lifeblood of Bronze Age prosperity, were breaking down. War and internal strife plagued great empires like the Hittites, Mycenaeans, and Egyptians. Into this chaos came waves of migrants and raiders—many of whom we now refer to as the Sea Peoples. These Sea Peoples, identified in Egyptian records with names like Sherden, Lukka, Shekelesh, and Peleset, were not a single ethnic group but a collection of displaced tribes and warriors, likely including Mycenaeans, Trojans, Hittites, and others forced from their homes by war, famine, and invasion. Some had served as mercenaries in earlier wars, but now they came in force—raiding, migrating, and settling along the Mediterranean coast. Egypt was the only major power able to withstand this onslaught. In 1175 BCE, during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses III, the Sea Peoples launched a large-scale invasion. Ramses defeated them first on land, then lured their fleet into an ambush in the Nile Delta, where Egyptian infantry and warships crushed the attackers. Despite this victory, Egypt was deeply strained. It lost control over Canaan and Syria, and its economy never fully recovered. Meanwhile, the Philistines settled along the southern Levantine coast near Gaza, and their name would give rise to the term Palestine. Other defeated groups like the Sherden and Shekelesh migrated westward, settling in Sardinia, Sicily, and parts of Italy. The Arameans moved into the ruins of Syria, while the Israelites began to appear in the highlands of Canaan. Even regions that escaped the worst of the fighting, like Assyria and Babylon, entered periods of decline. Their political structures held, but economic and cultural activity slowed. In Greece and Asia Minor, the collapse of the Mycenaean and Hittite civilizations led to the onset of the so-called "Dark Ages"—a centuries-long period marked by depopulation, loss of literacy, and cultural regression. In the end, the collapse of the great Bronze Age civilizations was not the result of a single event or invader. It was a combination of interlinked crises: environmental disaster, famine, mass migration, internal conflict, piracy, warfare, and the breakdown of the complex trade and diplomatic systems that had held the region together for centuries.
