Released in 1990 and directed by Paul Verhoeven, my favourite Dutch mad-man, Total Recall is a film that shouldn’t work as well as it does. It is, on the surface, a genre oddity: a hard-R, high-concept blockbuster that combines ultra-violence, big ideas, violent imagery, surreal comedy, and Arnold Schwarzenegger at the absolute peak of his Schwarzenegger-ness.
