On the night of August 15, 1944, German radar operators along the French Riviera suddenly lit up with panic. Dozens, no, hundreds of pings echoed off the Mediterranean, many of them enormous, unmistakably warships, headed straight for the beaches between La Ciotat and Cannes. Intercepted Allied radio confirmed their worst fears: this was it. The "second D-Day" was tonight. German units scrambled. Coastal defenses came alive. What remained of the Kriegsmarine surged toward the threat, desperate to meet the Allied armada before it reached shore. Then, through the dark, two German corvettes made visual contact. And paused. The silhouettes were like nothing in the manuals… they were massive, round like an orange, and… wait, are they floating in the air?
