In February 1883 it was reported that 3 men, Richards, McGinty and O'neil, had returned from 18 months prospecting on the West Coast and had bought with them a large parcel of gold. Amongst this, were 3 large nuggets weighing 10, 40 and 243 ounces. Now you would think, a discovery of this magnitude would have been recorded and documented accurately.. but its location appears to have been lost to time. The current MRT marking is on (this) inside bend, about 1km up from it's junction with the Whyte River. And naturally this is echoed in all modern day mining reports. But there’s absolutely no evidence to suggest this is true, and in fact, there’s overwhelming evidence to suggest otherwise.
