Join us as we continue our deep dive into the supposed “extant manuscripts” of Islam — this time focusing on the Sira, the official biography of Muhammad. Muslims often claim the Sira comes directly from Ibn Ishaq or Ibn Hisham, but the real story is far more complicated — and far more troubling for the Standard Islamic Narrative (SIN). So who actually created the Sira we have today? It wasn’t Ibn Ishaq. It wasn’t Ibn Hisham. It wasn’t even anyone living remotely close to the 7th or 8th century. The truth: Between 1858–1860, German scholar Heinrich Ferdinand Wüstenfeld collected scattered fragments from libraries and museums across six European cities, compiled them, and produced what later became the foundation of the “Sira.” Only afterward did translators like Guillaume sanitize and reshape it to meet Muslim expectations. This means: The Sira Muslims depend on today was assembled 1,000+ years after Muhammad supposedly lived It was created by a German linguist, not an Arab historian Its attachment to Ibn Ishaq or Ibn Hisham is a label added for credibility, not historical truth What Muslims call the “biography of Muhammad” is actually a 19th-century reconstruction, not an ancient eyewitness account In other words: The Sira — the central document Muslims use to know who Muhammad was — is not ancient, not original, and not authentic. It is a 19th-century European product, retroactively attributed to early Islamic writers to keep the SIN alive.
