Directed by Stephen Surjik and starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, the film follows Wayne and Garth as they try to turn a strange prophetic dream into a real world rock festival, but the more fascinating story unfolds off screen as Paramount rushed to capitalize on the massive success of the original movie. I explore how early drafts of the script caused serious concern at the studio, how Paramount CEO Sherry Lansing threatened legal action if changes were not made, and how those threats led to major rewrites that altered the tone and structure of the sequel. I also examine the strained working relationship between Myers and Carvey during this period, when the two were operating more as business partners than close friends, and how that tension carried over into the production. Featuring supporting performances from Tia Carrere, Christopher Walken, and Kim Basinger, Wayne’s World 2 was positioned as an easy hit but ended up receiving mixed reactions upon release.
