The most famous case is that of Naomi Johnson, who was pulled under by something with a powerful, deliberate grip and clawed hands in 1955. After her escape, she discovered a bizarre, bright green, non-human handprint on her leg that lasted for two weeks. Days later, a man claiming to be an Air Force Colonel appeared at her door, knew details about the mark no one else did, and classified the incident as a matter of national security, warning her never to speak of it. An investigator later uncovered at least a dozen similar attacks in the region, with three different victims reporting the same inexplicable green palm print. This modern-day mystery is mirrored by an older one: the 1891 sightings of the "Vevay Mud Mermaids." Multiple witnesses, including a former Confederate officer who sketched them, described five-foot-long, yellowish, semi-human creatures with webbed, clawed hands feeding on mussels near the river's snags.
