This 13-pound behemoth is the Dell XPS M1730, a 17-inch gaming powerhouse that cost roughly $3,000 at launch (about $6,500 in today’s money). This was one of the last high-end gaming machines designed in-house by Dell before the Alienware acquisition fully took over their design language. It features some of the rarest mobile silicon in history, including an AGEIA PhysX card, a dedicated processor built solely to handle in-game physics like debris and liquid ripples before GPUs took over the job. In this video, we’re doing a full restoration, including: Deep Cleaning: Removing years of gamer gunk and dust from the industrial-sized heatsinks. Thermal Overhaul: Replacing caked-on, 19-year-old thermal paste with PTM 7950 and using Upsiren Ultra thermal putty. Hardware Upgrades: Swapping the original 320GB mechanical hard drive for 2 SSD's. Performance Testing: Benchmarking classic titles like Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Unreal Tournament 3, and of course, seeing if it can still run Crysis. Despite the "bump gate" era GPU issues and some significant shipping damage to the hinges, I'm fighting to keep this piece of tech history alive.
