A parody of and homage to science-fiction films and series, especially Star Trek and its fandom, the film depicts the cast of a fictional cult television series, Galaxy Quest, who are drawn into a real interstellar conflict by actual aliens who think the series is an accurate documentary. It stars Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Daryl Mitchell. "Galaxy Quest" follows the former cast of a 1980s space-adventure show who are unwittingly drawn into a real interstellar conflict. Jason Nesmith, the show's star, enjoys fan conventions, while his co-stars resent him. At a convention, Jason is approached by aliens called Thermians, who believe the show is historical fact. Thinking it's a gig, Jason agrees and finds himself on a replica spaceship facing off against an enemy, Sarris. Back on Earth, Jason convinces his co-stars, and they join the Thermians on a space mission. They deal with a damaged power source, aliens, and Sarris' threats. Jason reveals the truth to Sarris, who triggers the ship's self-destruct. With the help of fans, the crew regains control and defeats Sarris, returning to Earth as heroes. The film ends with a sequel series celebrating their legacy. "Galaxy Quest" humorously explores the relationship between fiction and reality, emphasizing the power of fandom.
