Thousands evacuate border towns as Cambodian-Thai clash enters 3rd day
Description
Along the disputed border between Cambodia and Thailand, clashes entered their third day Wednesday as thousands of civilians were caught in the conflict. Many have fled their homes in search of safety, setting up makeshift camps with little food and supplies. 31-year-old Cambodian farmer, Marng Sarun said, "I could only take a little rice, like in this rice sack here. I did not have enough time to grab more things. I could grab only rice, cooking stuff and drinking water, that’s it. No time, I didn't have enough time to bring more materials to stay here long.” Meanwhile, Thai villagers who live near the border returned to find their homes severely damaged by Cambodian rockets. 65-year-old Thai villager Sopee Kunkem expressed both anger and sadness at the situation: "I'm sad. The house is already damaged, what can I do? I have no words for this. I was devastated and I was crying. I feel unfortunate for my home, I saved money to build this and now I'm 50, 60 years old, I won't be able to fix it." Both countries said they have evacuated hundreds of thousands of people from border areas while U.S. President Donald Trump said he would make a phone call to stop the fighting and salvage a ceasefire he brokered in July.
