First, you read an article that talks about a change and gives reasons for this change, for example, this can be an article of a university newspaper. Then you listen to a conversation between two persons who discuss the article. One person will talk about her opinion regarding the article and she will give reasons for her opinion. Your task is to talk about the opinion of the speaker and state the reasons she gives to support her opinion. Sometimes the question also asks you to give a quick summary of the announcement. You have 30 seconds to prepare your answer and 60 seconds to speak. What do you have to do to get a high score? 1. Use a template A template is a life-saver because it gives you sentence starters that you can memorize. This means that when you are taking the TOEFL you will not need to think about how to start your sentences. That is amazing because in task 2 in TOEFL Speaking you do not have time to think about that as you only have 30 seconds to prepare your answer. This is just enough time to think about the key points you want to address. A TOEFL Speaking template saves you time and makes you confident because you know that you have a structure you can rely on. Structure your answer You must deliver a well-structured answer. Use this structure: 1. Change 2. Reasons for the change - only if questions asks you to do that 3. Transition 4. Reasons of the speaker 3. Show off your vocabulary Use linking words such as first, second. Also, use synonyms, for example, do not always use ‘to say’, use words like ‘to state’, ‘to point out’ and so on. Task 2 in the ETS practice test The announcement states that the university's sculpture program will be discontinued. It gives two reasons for this change and then there is a transcript of a conversation between two students who talk about this change. In the TOEFL test you will listen to this conversation, but here in the practice test you have to read the transcript. The female student is not happy about the announcement and she gives two reasons for why the sculpture program should be continued in the future. Pay attention here: The question asks you to state the woman's opinion and to talk about the reasons she provides to support her opinion. The question does not ask you to give a summary of the announcement. Nevertheless, I recommend including the reasons of the announcement in your answer because the woman refers to them.
