Video Description
The year 1983. Former World No. 2 surfer Ian "Kanga" Cairns had just created a brand new tour the "ASP" Association of Surfing Professionals, providing ownership and control of the sport for both the event organizers and the surfers on tour, and most everyone on the circuit was on board. Backed by the biggest surfwear company at the time Ocean Pacific, the flagship event of the debut tour was the OP Pro in Huntington Beach. It attracted the biggest crowd by far of any contest to date as 125,00 spectators showed up, not only to watch the surfing, but the highly publicized Miss OP bikini contest. The surf event boasted the biggest prize purse to date of 50,000 with the winner taking $4,200 and a dodge truck along with the coveted trophy. The world's best showed up but at the end, it was two Californians left standing for the title, 22 year old Joey Buran and 19 year old Tom Curren. Also featuring Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew, Wes Laine and Mike Cruickshank. Music: Sits Vacant - Alone In The Dark (1981) #realsurfstories #surfhistory #tomcurren
