President Trump signed an executive order to transfer control of TikTok from its Chinese founder to an American consortium, valuing the video platform at $14 billion. He said the deal would keep the site operating after legislation last year forced its owner ByteDance to sell TikTok to an American company by early this year over security concerns or face a ban in the US. The deadline was postponed several times to allow negotiations to continue with the Chinese and Trump said President Xi had now personally approved the sale. Trump said some of the names involved in the new ownership included Larry Ellison of Oracle and Rupert Murdoch, chairman emeritus of NewsCorp. He has previously also named Michael Dell and Lachlan Murdoch among the investors.
