At UC San Diego, one of the top public research universities in the country, nearly one in four freshmen who were enrolled in Math 2 failed a basic math placement question equivalent to a first-grade balancing equation. This investigative commentary breaks down how over 900 UCSD students were placed into remedial math courses, why 70% scored below middle-school proficiency, and what the data reveals about grade inflation, test-free admissions, pandemic learning loss, and systemic failures in math education.
