Lithium batteries were NOT the cause of this fire. United Airlines Flight UA1122, a Boeing 787-9 bound from Newark (EWR) to Cape Town (CPT), was forced to return to Newark on August 3, 2025, after reports of smoke in the cabin and cockpit shortly after departure. The crew declared an emergency, dumped fuel over the Atlantic to reach a safe landing weight, and landed safely back at Newark about 90 minutes after takeoff. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and passengers were rebooked on another flight.
