About

Hi there, my name is Paul and I started Fading Lore because I believe the most fascinating stories are the ones that are fading from our collective memory. My commitment to you is that every story on this channel is built on a foundation of deep research and rigorous fact-checking. To deliver these stories, I aim for the clearest and most consistent listening experience possible. Let's just say I wasn't born with a 'voice for radio,' haha, so I utilize a high-quality synthetic narrator to ensure the story itself is always the star of the show. In that same spirit of transparency, many of the visuals you see are also created with the help of modern AI tools. My role as the creator is to be the editor-in-chief: guiding the entire process, personally verifying every detail, and making sure the final documentary is a story you can trust and enjoy. If you're a curious mind who loves history and folklore without the hype, I'm glad you're here.

She is a terrifying witch, and a guardian of the waters of life. For centuries, one name has haunted the forests of Eastern Europe: Baba Yaga. But what is her true story? This in-depth documentary unmasks the history of Baba Yaga, one of folklore's most enigmatic and powerful figures. Our journey begins not as a simple fairy tale, but as an investigation. We use the famous story of "Vasilisa the Beautiful" as our central case file to understand the strange rules of the witch's world. We will deconstruct her iconic symbols, from the walking hut on chicken legs to the mortar and pestle and the gruesome fence of bones, to reveal their ancient, pre-Christian origins. We'll explore the scholarly theories that frame her as a "folkloric memory" of a powerful Slavic goddess, a "Terrible Mother" archetype, and a timeless symbol of the wild, untamed feminine. This is the story of how a primordial goddess was demoted into a fairy tale monster, and what her enduring, paradoxical legacy can still teach us about the untamable wilderness of the human psyche.
