According to the former Governor of the Bank of Canada, Mark Carney (also on the shortlist as a possible future Canadian Prime Minister), it all comes down to common values. Carney sits down with Ian Bremmer of GZERO World for a frank discussion about the future of US-Canada relations and why the relationship with our neighbor to the north is so crucial amid so much geopolitical uncertainty around the world. “We're providing things to the United States that, from a strategic perspective, the US absolutely needs,” Carney stresses, “It needs clean energy; it needs critical metals and minerals from a reliable supplier; it needs a reliable partner in the backbone of artificial intelligence; and it needs capital, all things that Canada can bring.” Bremmer pushes Carney on his political aspirations in Canada and whether he’d be interested in possibly becoming Prime Minister in the future. While Carney doesn’t answer directly, he does say that there are urgent domestic issues in Canada that need to be addressed, like the need to build millions of new homes and lower the cost of housing, address the threat of climate change, and retrain Canadian workers to be competitive in the age of artificial intelligence.
