Mr. Terry learns and comments along the way! The Battle of Chosin Reservoir was a brutal 17-day engagement in the Korean War during the harsh winter of November and December 1950. A force of about 30,000 United Nations troops, primarily U.S. Marines from the 1st Marine Division and U.S. Army soldiers, was suddenly encircled in the mountains of North Korea by an attacking force of approximately 120,000 Chinese soldiers. Despite being overwhelmingly outnumbered and facing extreme sub-zero temperatures that caused thousands of frostbite casualties, the UN forces did not surrender. Instead, they executed a legendary "fighting withdrawal," breaking out from the encirclement and fighting their way over 70 miles south to the port of Hungnam. While the UN forces suffered heavy casualties, they inflicted devastating losses on the Chinese Army and successfully evacuated, marking a turning point that led to the complete withdrawal of UN troops from North Korea.
