Video Description

On the 80th anniversary of the events at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, #BBCWorldService hears from the only people who have ever experienced and survived a nuclear event. Warning: Contains upsetting testimony. Click here to subscribe to our channel 👉🏽 https://bbc.in/3VyyriM It's been 80 years since the US deployed atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a pivotal moment leading to the conclusion of World War Two. Historical estimates suggest that tens of thousands of lives were lost in these events - with around 78,000 of Hiroshima’s 350,000 residents perishing instantly, and at least 40,000 of Nagasaki’s 240,000 citizens losing their lives on impact. Today, with conflicts taking place across the globe, concerns about nuclear proliferation and discussions about nuclear weapons continue. BBC journalist Jordan Dunbar examines how these events in August 1945 shaped world history and what lessons can be learned to prevent similar tragedies. From the post-war arms race to recent global tensions, we see the enduring impact of these significant moments. Jordan speaks with survivors and three generations of a family in the UK about how they have been personally affected by the legacy of Hiroshima.  00:00 Context of the bombings 04:05 A journey to understanding what happened 05:17 Kyoko’s story 07:09 A persisting spectre of nuclear war 07:22 Searching for answers 08:56 The last generation of survivors 09:51 The day of the bombing 11:41 The primary school left standing 14:53 Survivors start to become ill 16:41 The reality of living with the aftermath 20:16 The Cold War and what happened next 20:55 Deterrence: A major reason nukes still exist 22:06 Nuclear powers once again in conflict 23:11 The Peace Memorial Park flame 24:09 Surviving Hiroshima: Three generations come together 27:50 Final thoughts 🎞️ Watch this film in Vietnamese here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDRDxmIQGnQ 🎞️ To watch investigative journalism from our award-winning BBC Eye investigations team, check out this documentary playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz_B0PFGIn4fa8LK1lptsvoA_spfJhzda 🎥 Find more of the best BBC World Service documentaries you can watch in less than 30 minutes here ➡️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz_B0PFGIn4cI2qSy69-3UkgBWaXGHRrx You may also be interested in these #BBCEye investigative documentaries: https://youtu.be/lIDTDlbmS7M?si=ZI8VG4TxKwbs_z9f https://youtu.be/GaYSEWlHrGw https://youtu.be/WV2fU_VWlqI https://youtu.be/e9bprEW5vtc https://youtu.be/bgVUnu9lXNA?si=0ie7tejC3haArXJr ---------------- This is the official BBC World Service YouTube channel.
