What I Learned in 2025 About the Shifting Balance of Power (USA, China, Russia, India, Europe)

The balance of power shifted dramatically in 2025. When India, China, and Russia clasped hands at the SCO summit in Tianjin, while the USA accused Europe of "civilizational erasure," it became clear: the American-led world order has crumbled. In this 2025 year-in-review, I share the most important historical insights I gained about each of the five major civilization states: USA, China, Russia, India, and Europe. Why history explains power better than IR theory: Standard international relations theories oversimplify power. States draw strength from at least seven sources—military capability, economic resources, technology, demographics, cultural influence, diplomatic networks, and internal cohesion. There's no single scoreboard. Power is contextual and multidimensional. Five key historical insights for 2025: 🇺🇸 USA – The toxic threesome of "Greater Europe" is breaking up. America was and remains the Western Frontier of this relationship with Europe and Russia, but its abusive partnership with Europe is crumbling. 🇨🇳 CHINA – China developed its own distinct path to modernity. The Thucydides Trap debate fails because it assumes China will follow America's hegemony project. It won't. 🇮🇳 INDIA – Decolonization isn't over. India's rise challenges residual colonial mindsets in the USA, Europe, and China. We're living through incomplete waves of decolonization. 🇪🇺 EUROPE – Europe has always been multipolar, multilateral, and multicivilizational. The "civilizational collapse" narrative is American propaganda that misreads European history. 🇷🇺 RUSSIA – Historical context shows Russia is not uniquely aggressive or imperial. The "Russia Anxiety" reflects cycles of fear and contempt rather than historical reality. We now live in a multipolar, multilateral, and multicivilizational world—what Kishore Mahbubani calls the "3M world." American primacy has collapsed not because of a single challenger, but because multiple vectors of power create opportunities for others.
