But Toyota managed to do just that when it launched the Grand Highlander for 2024 with the Hybrid Max powertrain. That pairs a 265-hp turbo four with an electric motor between the engine and six-speed automatic transmission, along with a second motor at the rear axle that provides all-wheel drive. It adds up to 362 horsepower, and the combination of the Grand Highlander's quickness—accelerating to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds when new—and 27-mpg EPA combined fuel-economy rating make it a standout in the segment. In a five-SUV comparison test, the Grand Highlander boasted the quickest acceleration and best fuel economy, a combo that doesn't typically go hand in hand. We named the GH to our 2024 10Best Trucks and SUVs list and then ordered one to live with for 40,000 miles. The Grand Highlander started at $44,770 in 2024, but we knew we wanted the Hybrid Max, and our Limited trim was the cheapest way to get it, at $55,435.
