Most of Canada’s lakes are found in a vast region called the Canadian Shield, a rugged, ancient rock formation that covers nearly half the country. This land is some of the oldest on Earth, made of tough granite that doesn’t erode easily and lacks the deep soils found in other regions. But the real game-changer came during the last Ice Age. Thousands of years ago, a massive ice sheet known as the Laurentide Ice Sheet covered most of Canada. As it advanced and retreated, this enormous glacier scraped and scoured the surface of the Canadian Shield like sandpaper, carving out countless depressions in the rock.
