Play should build trust, not fear, but when humans don’t set boundaries, play can quickly turn dangerous. In the first case, I work with Brandon, his teenage son Jackson, and their German Shepherd, Kobe. What the family sees as “play” has escalated into biting and bruising—especially with Jackson. Kobe isn’t aggressive by nature; he’s confused. Brandon’s calm energy has slipped into passiveness, leaving Kobe to decide when to protect, correct, or escalate. Through leash structure, controlled play, and clear body positioning, I show Brandon how to interrupt rough behavior early—before it explodes. As Brandon steps back into confident leadership, Kobe no longer feels responsible for managing the pack, and the aggression disappears. In the second story, Alyssa struggles with her bulldog, whose constant roughhousing has created an overstimulated, pushy dog that ignores boundaries. I explain that chaotic play without rules teaches dogs to disregard humans altogether. By introducing structure—calm starts, clear stops, and controlled space—we reset the relationship. The result is a dog who can play safely, listen clearly, and relax when it’s time to stop. The lesson is simple but powerful: Rough play isn’t the problem, uncontrolled energy is. Structure creates safety.
