This started off as a video about the BMW 801 but sort of morphed into a comparison with the Soviet ASh-82FN as used in the LA5FN. I mis spoke there. Typical automotive applications of the time used 4 piston rings, three compression rings and an oil control ring. Aero applications including the BMW 801, Merlin, R-2800 and most others I know of used FIVE rings. Yes 5, they had three compression and two oil control rings.
