In this tutorial, I take you to one of England’s most atmospheric and historic streets — The Shambles in York. Captured in the early hours of the morning, almost two hours before sunrise, this iconic location is transformed into a calm, empty, and beautifully lit scene, free from the crowds that normally fill its narrow passageway. Working from a series of carefully bracketed exposures, I’ll guide you through the HDR process to achieve the full dynamic range needed for a scene like this — protecting delicate highlights from the shopfront lights while retaining the deep shadow detail that gives The Shambles its character. You’ll see how to balance the tones, manage colour, and avoid the harsh or unnatural look that HDR can sometimes create. From there, I’ll take you into Photoshop to refine and elevate the image further: Cleaning and correcting the frame Using Generative Fill to remove unwanted distractions, including water drops on the lens Applying subtle enhancements to restore texture, contrast, and atmosphere Final colour balancing to create a cohesive, cinematic finish If you’ve followed my previous tutorials, you’ll recognise the smooth workflow between Lightroom and Photoshop — but this time with the added challenge of an early-morning, high-contrast scene captured in a historically rich environment.
