1950年，美國新墨西哥州，在造原子彈的洛斯阿拉莫斯實驗室裡，幾位大牛科學家在食堂吃午餐。他們聊起了外星人，超光速，生命起源的種種問題。突然，被譽為原子能之父的物理學家恩里科·費米問了大家一個問題：如果銀河系存在先進文明，他們在哪裡？所有人都靜默了，這些人都是大科學家，馬上就跟上了費米的思路。這是一個思想實驗，我們假設銀河係有一個可以進行星際探索的文明，他們可以以10分之一的光速飛行。銀河系的直徑大約是10萬到18萬光年，也就是說橫跨銀河系最多需要180萬年。假設這個文明開始向銀河系殖民，他們先向銀河系的四條旋臂各發射一艘飛船，然後以四艘飛船的目的地為中心，開始向全銀河系探索，這樣算起來，最多200萬年的時間裡，銀河系所有的恆星系裡應該都有這個文明的飛船。 200萬年的時間，在整個宇宙的生命史中就是一瞬間，只要有一個銀河系的文明比人類提前200萬年到達星際旅行狀態，他們早就佔領地球了。但是費米提出了驚天一問，這些外星人在哪裡呢？
